Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about enrolling, studying, and graduating.
When was The Tech Academy established?
The Tech Academy was founded in 2014 by Jack Stanley and Erik Gross. Its predecessor, Prosper I.T. Academy, began in 2012. Toward the end of 2013, Erik approached Jack for a partnership and The Tech Academy was born.
When do classes start?
Anytime! The Tech Academy offers open enrollment, which means students can begin immediately. There are no set start dates or cohorts — you enroll whenever it is convenient for you.
How long do the boot camps take?
Duration varies by program and study intensity (full-time vs. part-time). For example, the Front End Web boot camp runs about 10 weeks full-time / 18 weeks part-time, while the Software Developer and Game Developer programs run about 22 weeks full-time / 40 weeks part-time. Students are allowed one year of access to their boot camp.
What is the required study schedule?
Since every boot camp is self-paced, students set their own study schedule, with access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A minimum of 20 hours of study per week is required, though we recommend 40 hours per week. Instructors are available 9:30am–9:00pm PST on weekdays and 10:00am–5:00pm on weekends.
How much do the coding boot camps cost?
Tuition varies by program, and we frequently offer discounts for paying in full up front. For current pricing and any active discounts, please contact admissions — see the Financing page for payment-plan options.
Where is The Tech Academy located?
Our headquarters are at 310 SW 4th Ave Suite 200, Portland, Oregon 97204. We deliver online coding boot camps to students all over the world.
Can I take the program online and study from home?
Yes. The Tech Academy boot camps can be taken online in full. Students may also study on-campus in Portland. Instructors assist online students through a combination of phone calls, video conferencing, emails, and screen sharing.
What are the laptop requirements for the boot camps?
Most programs require a Windows 10 machine with an i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a 128GB drive (SSD preferred), or a Mac with 8GB RAM and a 256GB drive. The Game Developer program has higher requirements (quad-core 2.5GHz+, a dedicated GPU, DirectX 11/12). Note that some points in every boot camp require Microsoft software/Windows, so Mac users may need to install Windows.
Do you offer any discounts or scholarships?
Please contact admissions for current information on discounts and scholarships.
How is the curriculum developed?
Jack Stanley and Erik Gross are the primary creators of the curriculum: they plan together, Jack writes the content, and Erik edits. Many others have contributed as well, and Dr. Brent Wilson from George Fox University serves as curriculum advisor.
What are the payment options?
There are two primary options. Paying full tuition up front qualifies for our best discounts and savings. Alternatively, in-house financing lets students pay monthly with no minimum credit required to qualify (this option does not include discounts). See the Financing page for details.
How does The Tech Academy maintain its high job placement rate?
The final course on every boot camp is the Job Placement Course, covering interviews, resume writing, coding challenges, soft skills, networking, and job-search resources. We also have job placement staff who assist students in landing technical positions — to date they have helped over a thousand graduates secure employment.
Is The Tech Academy accredited?
The Tech Academy is a licensed career school through the Higher Education Coordinating Commission.
What certification do you offer?
As a licensed trade school, we are authorized to issue certificates for our programs. Boot camp graduates receive a certificate for their boot camp upon completion.
What is your refund policy?
Students are granted a pro-rated refund based on the date they signed their enrollment agreement, calculated by calendar weeks. No refunds are granted once a student is 50% into the program. Students who enroll with in-house financing (monthly payments) are not eligible for refunds. See the Refund Policy page for the full schedule.
Do you offer a referral program?
Yes — we offer a 5% commission for anyone you refer who enrolls in a boot camp, which can be applied toward your own tuition. To qualify, the student you refer must pay tuition in full up front; commissions are not paid on monthly payments.
